The Impossibility of Boredom in London

Although at times it can be a bit of a bummer (cramped trains, endless queuing, rotten winters, short summers, a disturbing obsession with class, the occasional damp personality), for the most part, living in London is pretty awesome. Before leaving Ireland to live in the Big Smoke, my Dad, taking inspiration from Samuel Johnson’s quip that “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford”, told me that “If you manage to get bored in London then you’re an idiot.” Credit where it’s due, the old man had a point. There is just so much stuff here that it’s actually difficult to decide on one activity at a time. When not working, my current hobby is to take the tube to a particular borough and explore the area on foot, scouting the cafes, bars, galleries and restaurants that I can later share with friends. I believe this makes me what the French refer to as a Flaneur. Here is just a very short snippet of some of the things I’ve seen in London the last few months:

  1. now there is one of the very few large cities in Europe I have not visited – what an grand oversight, I must remedy as soon as possible – seriously your post strengthens the resolve of me wanting to go there. Have a great day!

  2. You have a good selection of photos and good places to visit in London. I live here for 5 years now, having moved from Albania; I have also lived in Paris for 7 years and I love that city a lot, quite different from London, more romantic and more pressed in its architecture, but London is definitely very interesting, buzzying and with a lot of hidden secrets an rich history.
