The Backlash Against Malcolm Gladwell

Earlier today, The Guardian’s website asked readers to submit questions which Stephen Fry would then relay to Malcolm Gladwell when the pair meet next week. Gladwell , you see, is currently publicizing his latest book, David and Goliath, on the topic of underdogs and overcoming adversity. Following a quick scroll through the page’s comments section, it becomes frightfully clear that not everybody is a fan of Gladwell’s work:

I believe that this is what is usually referred to as a backlash. By any standards, these comments are far from flattering with much of the criticism based on particular details of Gladwell’s life and work outlined here. I am interested to see if any of these awkward questions are in fact relayed to Mr. Gladwell. I would guess not.

Wow – I didn’t realize…I really admired Mr. Gladwell…maybe I shouldn’t? I’ll have to do some independent research. Thanks for the post.

I don’t think he will answer any of those questions. I remember commenting critically on Jonah Lehrer’s blog about a year before he crashed. He would not answer even when others commented on my comments. He and Gladwell seem alike.
